My name is Yvonne Pickens: I live on the north coast of New South Wales and am passionate about fabrics for their sensuality, texture and colour and have spent a lifetime collecting them.
At the age of five my grandfather gave me a small hand operated sewing machine and I began making my dolls dresses. the passion of that seven year old girl had stayed with me for the rest of my life and it has taken me into the world of dance and theatre costume, bridal and evening wear, ready to wear fashion and swimwear. As well as dressing myself, three children, neighbours children, friends and family.
Sewing is now mostly a thing of the past and my life is now devoted to fabric Sculpture the fabrics, recycled clothing and assorted paraphernalia have found a new home in my sculpture studio along with found and gathered objects and knick knacks
I am inspired by people in their daily lives, and using a combination of style costume and pose I am able to capture a mood or attitude.
I hold classes at my studio for people wishing to enjoy a relaxing day discovering the wonder of fabric sculpture and letting their senses go wild. The classes are simple to ensure that each participant is able to complete a small piece of their very own by the end of the day.
Under guidance the figurines come to life delighting those who are new to the creative process and accomplished artists alike.
My individual and unique pieces and have been hand crafted using Paverpol fabric hardener and recycled materials.
